Soil 206 General Soils Laboratory

Monday 1:00-2:00pm, Tuesday 10:00-11:00am, and by appointment.
Course Objectives:
Two contrasting soil types will be examined and characterized by each lab group. The data collected will be organized and evaluated so each student has the rudimentary ability to make environmentally sound land-use decisions.
1. Integrate the principles of physics, chemistry, and biology with the concept
of a soil system.
2. Perform qualitative and quantitative studies to assess the ecological roles
soil plays in various ecosystems.
3. Apply the principles of soil science to land use and management to become
a responsible steward of our most precious natural resource - THE SOIL.
Prerequisites:
1. A working knowledge of general chemistry, biology, and algebra.
2. Concurrent enrollment or completion of Soil 205.

· A five-point quiz will be given during the first 20 minutes of every lab period. No make-ups.
o It will include questions from the current week's lab handout.
o One quiz score will be dropped.
o No quizzes on field trips-attendance will count as the quiz.
· 10 points from questions collected at the beginning of each lab. These questions will cover problems from the previous week.
· A report will be assigned that compiles information gathered through lab exercises with data found in county soil surveys.
· Mid-term and Final examinations are worth 50 points each.
· Plagiarism will be dealt with severely and promptly according to the University regulations. Feel free to ask any questions concerning citation of other's work.
Be sure to print out and read through the upcoming lab. Be prepared for the
five point quiz held in the beginning of lab. These quizzes should be simple
if you read and think about the lab report ahead of time.
