Textbook:  Brady, N.C., and R.R. Weil. 1999.  The Nature and Properties of soils. 12th ed.  Prentice Hall, Inc., New Jersey.

Prerequisites:  CHEM 050 or 101

Grading:  There will be five short tests or quizzes given throughout the semester (see lecture schedule for dates). Tests will be completed within one lecture period and will be worth 50 pts each.  The 5th test will be given during the scheduled final exam period.  Each test will emphasize the material covered since the previous test, but because of the cumulative nature of the subject matter, other material may be included. 

Attendance:  Regular attendance and class participation are required.  Make-up exams will not be given for unexcused absences. 

 

Goals: 

-         To appreciate the role of soil in sustaining ecosystem function and as a natural resource

 

-         To gain a basic understanding of soil chemistry, biology, and physics

 

-         To understand of how and why soils differ across a landscape
