Typic Petroargid
southern New Mexico

This shallow soil formed in alluvial sediments in a basin of the Basin and Range province. Native vegetation consists of black grama, snake-weed, mesquite, and yucca. The thick CaCO3-cemented (Bkm) horizon is known as a petrocalcic horizon or caliche.
