Iceland
This Andisol (Thingvallasveit
pedon) has formed in volcanic ash and eolian material near Thingvellir
National Park in southwestern Iceland. The top 60 cm contains 70-80
g/kg organic carbon, and lacks distinctive horizonation. Soil structure
is weak and the volcanic ash particles are mostly silt- and sand-sized,
making these soils highly susceptible to wind erosion. Annual precipitation
is 1400 mm and the vegetation is moss/heath.
More information about these soils is available from http://www.rala.is/desert/.
