Vitrixerand landscape
Bonner Co., ID

This area incurred repeated flooding from glacial Lake Missoula, more than 13,000 years ago. Soils are formed in outwash deposits from these catastrophic floods. Periodic ash falls in the area have mixed into the upper profile. The largest single ash fallout occurred 7,700 year ago, from Mt. Mazama. The soils are used for timber harvest, patureland, and irrigated crop production. In addition, housing development is becoming an increasingly common land use. The rapid permeability of the soil and underlying sediment have created aquifer contamination issues for the area.
