Maynard A. Fosberg Soil Monolith Collection

The Maynard A. Fosberg Monolith Collection contains approximately 235 soils from the state of Idaho, the Pacific Northwest, and the United States and represents one of the most unique teaching resources at the University of Idaho. The collection is displayed on the walls of the Agricultural Sciences Building (first floor) on the UI campus, where it has been viewed by thousands of students and interested visitors. The collection was officially dedicated in October, 1998, to Dr. Maynard A. Fosberg, Professor Emeritus of Soil Science. Dr. Fosberg began the assembling of the collection shortly after his arrival at UI in 1949. The monolith collection was totally renovated in 2004 with the help of Jason Jimenez.  New cards were developed and a database with information about each monolith.  In 2007 PSES department head, Ding Johnson, made a long awaited dream come true with the addition of railings to secure and protect the monolith collection.  The collection has grown and now ranks as one of the largest in the US.
