Soil Hydrology - Landscape Relationships

The Palouse region is characterized by dissected, gently rolling hills. Hillslope units form micro-catchments with ephemeral streams running through the center catchment in winter and spring. Perched water tables in soils of the Palouse are strongly influenced by the region's terrain. Zones of episaturation tend to be thicker in concave regions of slope where water flow is convergent and the specific catchment area is greater. In convex areas of the hillslope where soils tend to be thinner, perched water tables are subject to subsurface-to-surface return flow and may contribute to surface runoff.
