The Idaho Soils Atlas, features pictures and
information about 54 soils from throughout the state.
The purpose of this atlas is to highlight some of the prominent soil characteristics and
properties found in the state and to describe how these characteristics affect land use
and management. This atlas is written in a manner that makes it appropriate for all
audiences, ranging from soil scientists to those having little or no technical background
in soil science. It also serves as an introduction to more complete information available
in soil survey publications.
The soils included in the atlas were selected from several hundred different soil types that have been identified in Idaho. Outstanding color photos of each of the soil profiles and the accompanying landscapes will appeal to anyone with an interest in the natural sciences. A description of the processes and factors involved in the formation of each soil type is presented, as well as information regarding its use, management, and geographic distribution. A glossary containing a number of technical soil science terms is also included.
